the energy levels shot up our spines and thru the roof last night like never felt before! Los Angeles.. the key club.. gODHEAD.. Cc DeVille.. Faster Pussycat...tons and tons of beautiful Hollywierdos and freaks! It was wall to wall, hot and steamy, loud and raging!
i've been on this tour since april 2nd and the action is nonstop. I never realized just how much work goes into a Pigface production. I didn't know Buzz and Groovie Mann were the sweet and very entertaining.. and the boys of Zeromancer couldn't be more down to earth. and Krztoff... I've made a new friend. Many new friends.. Dirk just jumped on tour last night and will continue with us for a few more dates. He's contributed to earlier Pigface albums, Gub being one.
ANYWAY!!! COME OUT COME OUT COME OUT!!! There's exactly a week left after tonight. Tomorrow we're in San Francisco at DNA, and we continue up the west coast and shoot over and accross and above and beyond and have the grand finale in Chicago at Metro. Is THAT going to be a show!
Monicka & Erik! Thanks so much for all your help yesterday! I wish you could of made it out tonight... It was great riding around in your hearse down Sunset Blvd! Oh- and I have your ten bucks from Jolly...
---see you on the other side of the road---

We were originally supposed to open for you but our drummer couldn't make it that night.

But look foward to meeting you.

APRIL 14 - Portland (retrospective #1.1)
[info]jett_black
2003-04-15 02:42 pm UTC (link)
I feel like I am jumping the gun here... as there's not a thread to reply to yet for the April 14th THE UNITED tour date at the Roseland (Portland, OR)..

but, hey... call me an impatient fuckhead, if it makes you feel any better. No doubt; I should probably re-label the bottom of my laminate to read: IMPATIENT FUCKHEAD

So, here goes... (and this is by no means the only time i'll have feedback about this date on the UNITED tour. see my own gd lj for more schlep about the gig sometime in the near future).

First off, it is my extreme misfortune for being unable to also to attend the gig in Seattle at the much smaller venue, the Catwalk this evening. I like the catwalk... don't get me wrong... it is more intimate and it is not *too* small.. it's just a helluva a lot smaller compared to The Roseland. My issues with tonight are my own... personal vehicle needs brake pad replacements, and, had I the money, one would imagine that I would not be grinding the rotars down already. poor schlep... o-well.

So... I'll be home tonight with Sonya Brown transcribing interview notes and recordings and brewing a show review to submit to - http://www.inmusicwetrust.com The interview will appear in print in an internationally distributed zine and ... zine policy prevents me from pre-empting the details or even citing the name of the zine... so... blah.

This post is going to be a shout out, not an overview, so much.

I wanna shout out to Lacey of Nocturne and say that you looked so bitchin' up on stage last night!

it's really nice to see you again and making such a strong and assertive presence.. and that top you were wearing... very kewl. i really wanna know where you got that? i love the design. And not to diminish in anyway the following, but: bitchin legs and boots as always.

Also... everyone was fabulous...

Kami: thanks for sorting through the morass with the fucking Roseland morons. not the first nor the last time that same damned shit is likely to happen as it always does at the Roseland. I don't have a ton of complaints about the Roseland... that's just a repetitive beef, a stickler that *INVARIABLY* delays us and prevents us from getting any photos of the opening act...

which - by the way - performed fantastically!

RAILER was the local opener for the April 14th gig.. and they'll be opening tonight at the Catwalk as wrell ,and then again at the gig in Salt Lake City. People: get there early to catch the local flave-ahh! RAILER - http://www.railerband.com Best show I've seen these boys do all year! And it looked like they were really having a wonderful time! The audience response was really wonderful, too.. it gives me such joy to hear the cheers for the local boys on the big stage for the first time at the Roseland. I spoke with some of the boys from Railer... and the response is one of being stunning humility, and honour for the opportunity to gig with the great folks on THE UNITED TOUR.

Heads up to anyone seeking folks at rondom to chat with and interview:

GRAB BEAR into a conversation... he's a real riot of vitality and information and just a really fun guy to chat with. i can only imagine what madness and delirious mayhem it must be like tonight at the Catwalk with so many beautiful faces and eye candy to literally bump into in practically one room and the adjacent lobby type room with the pool table.

All the tattoos and fashion and blistering conversations... i want to somehow slip away and get up there somehow... but i know Sonya will kick my ass for not being around to crank out the details in regarding notes and stuff from last night. i can't even afford the gas to get up there and back, even if I split it with someone else... i'm that fucking poor right now.

---------

uhm... i'm long winded... so... second part of this brief message will appear momentarily...

--------

APRIL 14 - Portland (retrospective # 1.2.1)
[info]jett_black
2003-04-15 03:01 pm UTC (link)

ZEROMANCER: how fucking kewl was that? Maria Ferrero kept harping on the hone about how Hot & Sexy Alex is to look at and ... I'm thinking like... yeah, sure.. she's just a good talker and she's backing the band... and that's sweet and all.... but give it a rest!

NO WAY! Alex is yummy! and get away from the celophane video screen! the videos are nice... but at times... it seems like music videos are just commercial mind-fucks and i kinda tune them out. I have a couple of ZMR videos, though. I'm telling you... the videos are NOTHING compared to the LIVE *ZEROMANCER* the word "surreal" jumps to mind... overused, but man, that's just how it feels. Kim is amazing... I had no idea from the videos just how amazing this guy would be LIVE!

And Chris is stunning ... just watch him closely now and then... there's such massive energy flowing through this guy into the music!

The stage at the Roseland really presents the Artists well, I believe... i perpetually get this larger than life impression and the machismo .. if that's the right word *at all*... applies both to men and women through the music up on stage... it's invigorating and it's sexy, and it's a bucket of sweat pouring across dazzling eyes that reveal so much how each musician is simply thrilled to be up on stage before the gathered crowd doing exactly what the4y want to be doing at that moment!

There's nothing sexy about my day-job, and i would never expect anyone to remotely find me sexy while i'm doing it... i don't want to be there, and i'm not about to pretend that i enjoy it. The contrast for these musicians who have got to be tired and a little frustrated by the duration and demands of touring and performing gigs back to back for weeks and weeks, .. it's got to be grueling.. and yet, up on the stage last night, like i said, there's no place else in the world that these fabulous musicians would have rather been.

Thanks to everyone involved for being so friendly and accessible and kewl about everything despite all the routine b.s. that goes on every fucking day at so many countless music venues across the USA.

BILE: I can't stress enough, nor even adequately how kewl it was to see BILE ... this is the first time for me to see some of the musicians on this tour to perform live... Pigface was awesome, and BILE was just not at all what I had merely imagined.

I sometimes have pre-conceived notions, i must admit.

i never cease to be amazed at just how wrong my preconceptions can be sometimes. Just ask Sonya Brown, i can be a really difficult fuckhead, sometimes.

BILE was just phenomenal! what an incredible performance! I a hesitant to begin with generic descriptors as they seem so inadequate at illustrating the transendent beauty and overwhelming sense of potency that BILE delivers in unleashing the muse within the music!

I'm not going to taint your senses with words that fail to describe the presentation. You simply must see BILE live on stage at the earliest possible convenience.

If you haven't made definite plans to get into the nearest UNITED TOUR gig, then get off your ass and do it NOW!

You will be so STUNNED by the performances that you might forget yourself for a moment and find yourself grooving and dancing and having a wonderful time. Stick around for PIGFACE... it's so much larger than life. I can't begin to tell you how kewl it feels to see this happening on this scale in the all too damned conservative USA.

kudos to PIGFACE. KUDOS to Underground Inc.

http://www.undergroundinc.com

and a truckload of kudos to everyone on THE UNITED TOUR!

INTERVIEW: Martin Atkins
[info]jett_black
2003-04-15 05:20 pm UTC (link)
April 14th - Whilst hanging about the tour manager's control room at The Roseland, I mentioned to Martin Atkins that I really enjoyed reading the interview at IN MUSIC WE TRUST - http://www.inmusicwetrust.com - that Alex Steininger had conducted with himself, Martin Atkins.

Here's a direct link to that article, which, by the way, will remain up at this link forever.

INTERVIEW: Martin Atkins
Founder of Pigface, Invisible Records, and the Indie Label Collective, Underground Inc. (Underground Inc.)
By: Alex Steininger

http://www.inmusicwetrust.com/articles/58h03.html

Martin's responses are so very powerful and direct... and just what indie musicians really need to hear (read).

I don't know what the questions were... as this reads more like a feature article with Martin's detailed quotes feeding the flow and pace of the article.

As a music journalist who often conducts interviews, I have great respect and admiration for excellent responses... and for well-worded questions, too.

In any case, if you are a musician thinking about submitting music anywhere, and (of course) particularly to Underground Inc / Invisible Records... then I recommend reading this article first.

"Atkins also offers consultations and advice to his roster, telling Underground Inc.-affiliated bands and labels the truth, even if they don't want to hear it..."

Cheers!

Jett Black...
